Το Thuparama είναι τέμενος με θολωτή στέγη κατασκευασμένη από τούβλα. Σχεδόν το σύνολο του κτιρίου επέζησε πάνω από 900 χρόνια ως εκ θαύματος. Το αρχικό όνομα αυτού του τεμένους δεν είναι γνωστό. Θεωρείται ότι αυτό χτίστηκε από έναν υπουργό του Βασιλιά Parakramabahu (1153-1186) για να στεγάσει τα λείψανα του δοντιού του Βούδα.

Μια άλλη άποψη είναι ότι χτίστηκε από τον Βασιλιά Vijayabahu Ι (1070-1110). Αν και είναι αρκετά σκοτεινά μέσα, κάποιος μπορεί να δει διάφορα αγάλματα του Βούδα στο θάλαμο.

Polonnaruwa

Η Polonnaruwa, η υπέροχη μεσαιωνική πρωτεύουσα της Σρι Λάνκα είχε καθιερωθεί ως η πρώτη πόλη του νησιού, τον 11ο αιώνα μ.Χ. Αντικατέστησε την Anuradhapura, λεηλατήθηκε απελπιστικά γυμνή μετά την εισβολή στρατευμάτων από τη Νότια Ινδία.

Η αρχαία πόλη της Polonnaruwa ανακηρύχθηκε από την U.N.E.S.C.O. ως Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς το 1982.

English version

The Thuparama shrine, with a vaulted roof constructed in brick. Almost the whole buiding as survived over 900 years miraculously. The original name of this image house is not known. It is thought that this was built by a minister of King Parakramabahu (1153-1186) to house the tooth relic.

Another belief is that this was built by King Vijayabahu I (1070-1110). Although it is quite dark within, one can see Buddha statues seated in the chamber.

Polonanaruwa

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's splendid medieval capital was established as the first city of the island in the 11th Century, A.D. It replaced Anuradhapura and laid hopelessly bare to the invading armies from South India.

The city reached a dazzling but pitifully brief zenith in the 12th century and though ravaged by invasion in the centuries following, much evidence remains of the old grandeur and glory.

Ancient city of  Polonnaruwa declared by U.N.E.S.C.O. as a World Heritage Site in 1982.
